Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo








    








Andimba Toivo ya Toivo was born on 22 August 1924 as second of seven children in Omangundu in Ovamboland, northern South West Africa. He attended the church school at Onayena but was herding cattle often, as was common for boys in this area.He trained to become a carpenter at Ongwediva Industrial School between 1939 andn 1942 during World War II Ya Toivo voluntarily joined the Native Military Corps, a unit of the racially segregated army of the Union of South Africa. He fought on the British side of the Allied Forces. and attained the rank of a corporal during his service. When he was tried for terrorism in the 1960s he remembered his motivation thusly

South African rule

On 17 December 1920, South Africa undertook administration of South West Africa under the terms of Article 22 of the Covenant of the  League of Nations  and a Class C  Mandate  agreement by the  League Council . The Class C mandate, supposed to be used for the least developed territories, gave South Africa full power of administration and legislation over the territory, but required that South Africa promote the material and moral well-being and social progress of the people. The League's supersession by the United Nations in 1946, South Africa refused to surrender its earlier mandate to be replaced by a United Nations Trusteeship agreement, requiring closer international monitoring of the territory's administration. Namibia Independence Day

Namibia’s Independence Day, which Happened on March 21, 1990, marked a very important  moment in the country’s history. After approximately 75 years of being under South African control, Namibia emerged as the world’s newest independent nation. The ceremony took place at Windhoek’s sports stadium, where the South African flag was lowered, making way for Namibia’s new flag a vibrant combination of red, blue, green, and gold.
